Al Otro Lado del Muro is a Telemundo super series that tells the stories of two radically different women, Sofia and Eliza, who cross the U.S-Mexico border in order to pursue the American dream. In the super series, viewers are given insight into some of the struggles, barriers, and triumphs seen by many immigrants, especially illegal immigrants, who cross the border from Mexico into the United States.
Because both Eliza and Sofia have continuously depended on men prior to arriving to the United States, their efforts to create better lives for their children as single mothers are both valiant and hear twrenching at times. It seems that every time that they are victorious in surpassing a milestone, something tragic happens. For example, Eliza and her children successfully and legally cross into the United States just to be stranded by her husband Max. That situation forced Eliza to find a place for her children to stay in a country in which she doesn’t speak the native language.
As I continue to watch the stories of Sofia and Eliza’s families, I have began to empathize with the situations of many immigrants (legal or illegal) in the United States. Many do not arrive in this country easily. There are many struggles, setbacks, and barriers (such as the US-Mexico wall, language, culture) that many have to cross in order to arrive here. The journey can be very dangerous, like Sofia’s, and some do not survive the journey. Although the journey is hard and dangerous, many still endure it because they have a grand desire to pursue the American dream. I believe that the writers of Al Otro Lado del Muro have ingeniously written a story that tells a few of the many stories of immigrants to this country, especially in a time when border control is such a prevalent discussion in politics today. I am excited to continue to watch and learn more about the point of view of immigrants in the United States.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your commentary about the strong female characters in your telenovela and their journeys. I found one statement particularly interesting in your post: the one about how it seems every time that your protagonists begin to take a step in the right direction towards safety and success, something happens to get in their way.
I have felt the exact same way regarding my telenovela, La Reina del Sur, and the protagonist Teresa Mendoza. Throughout her journey running from the life she was once so comfortable with in Mexico to the foreign land of Spain, every step in her journey was interrupted with another disaster. For example, in an episode I was watching last night, Teresa had just gotten on her feet in her new city, only to be framed for a murder that she did not do.
This constant return to disaster can become frustrating after a while, but it also works to create a stronger bond between the viewer and characters on screen.

ReplyDeleteSi tuviera que volver a elegir la telenovela que elegí para ver, creo que elegiría Al Otro Lado del Muro. En su opinión, el tema es muy relevante hoy en día, especialmente con la división política en la que nos encontramos como nación. Creo que aprender más sobre el lado opuesto, aquellos que esperan emigrar a los Estados Unidos, ayudaría a la mayoría de las personas a empatizar aún más con sus luchas y esperanzas para el sueño americano. Como usted dijo, esta telenovela lo ha ayudado a desarrollar una comprensión más profunda de la lucha de los inmigrantes para llegar a los Estados Unidos, lo que creo que puede ser una gran experiencia de aprendizaje para todos los que ven esta telenovela. Como aprendimos al comienzo de nuestra clase, las telenovelas tienen muchos estereotipos de solo ser historias de amor dramáticas, pero también pueden hablar sobre problemas y luchas de la vida real.
Me gusta el tema de este post, porque soy un estudiante de Español aquí y obviamente es difícil traducir a otras personas lo que aprender sobre la inmigración y las vidas de otra gente. En momentos con mis padres o mis mejores amigas, también quiero que ellos ven lo que veo. Tu telenovela se parece como un ejemplo increíble de compartir una nueva perspectiva con estas personas, una perspectiva diferente que no saben, pero necesita en una manera profunda.
ReplyDeleteSus comentarios son muy parecidos a un libro que estoy leyendo, se llama “Tell me how it ends.” El libro describe las preguntas de formularios que niños que acaban de inmigrar tienen que llenar para conseguir un caso en el tribunal de inmigración. Muestra las historias de estos niños, como sufren en su camino a los Estados Unidos y también como sufre cuando están aquí.
Es interesante a mi porque parece como la publica americana piensa que inmigrantes tienen un camino perfecto de viajar, y tiene su vida perfecta cuando está aquí. Pero no es la verdad, y necesitamos historias como su telenovela y mi libro para mostrarlo.
